1. Toothbrush
One of the simplest ways to clean the cracks in hardwood floors is with a toothbrush. Dip an old toothbrush in water and add a couple of drops of soap. Gently brush between the gaps in the hardwood to remove dirt and debris.
After scrubbing the cracks in the floorboards, clean the floor thoroughly with a mop. If any moisture remains in the cracks of the floor, pour a little bit of table salt into the gaps to soak up the excess water. Once it dr ies, clear the salt away with a vacuum cleaner.
2. Stain Remover
For a deeper clean, you can use a stain remover, like Oxiclean, instead of soap. Simply combine a little bit of water and a little bit of the stain remover. Then, use an old toothbrush to scrub in the cracks of the hardwood floor. Afterward, mop away the cleaner and use table salt to soak up any excess moisture. Once it dries, use a vacuum to clear away the salt.
Be careful to only place the stain remover in the cracks of the hardwood, and not on the planks themselves, as this cleaner can damage the outer finish.
3. Powerful Vacuum Cleaner
Another way to clean out the cracks in your flooring is by using a powerful vacuum. A wet/dry shop vacuum usually works best, but you can use any type of heavy-duty vacuum cleaner. Simply fasten the arm attachment and use it to suck up any dirt or debris that may have settled into the cracks.

Wood that’s properly finished, sealed, and polyurethaned will resist forming cracks. However, wood that’s not properly sealed will react to temperature changes and humidity, leading to shrinking and expanding. These fluctuations are what cause gaps and cracks to form in your floorboards.
To prevent your hardwood from cracking or forming gaps, have it resealed every few years. You should also invest in a dehumidifier, avoid mopping with excess water, and repair any cracks as soon as they happen to prevent further damage.
