How to Get Scratches Out of Hardwood Floors

If you’ve invested in Aurora hardwood flooring, you want to do your best to protect your investment for years to come. One common frustration amongst homeowners that have hardwood floors is the fact that they may easily scratch. Of course, the amount of scratching depends on the type of wood floors that you have in addition to the level of wear and tear that is around your home. Pet owners, especially those who own dogs, may experience higher levels of activity and scratching. Here are some solutions on how to improve the appearance of your hardwood floors.

Superficial Scratches

Examine the scratch on the surface of your floor and determine what layer of flooring it is impacting. Superficial scratches only impact the floor’s finish and they are the easiest to get out. First, try a DIY solution that is made from things that you likely already have around your house. Mix even amounts of apple cider vinegar and olive oil in a bowl to create a solution. Apply a layer over the scratch and let it sit for several hours. Wipe it away to see how the scratch has improved!

Minor Scratches

One layer deeper than superficial scratches can be difficult to get rid of with the above method. Minor scratches typically impact the wood that is underneath the protective coating. To reduce the scratch on this second layer, start by thoroughly cleaning the surface. Next, use steel wool and rub over the scratched area. Make sure to rub with the grain of the wood and buff it until it is removed. Blend the edges by using the steel wool to gently wipe the surrounding areas of the scratch. Cover the scratches with a wax stick and let it sit for 10 minutes. Then, use a soft cloth to buff the area. Finally, if you don’t have a layer of polyurethane on your floors, use a paste wax to make the scratch even less noticeable.

Deep Scratches

If your floor is covered in deep scratches, it’s ideal to refinish the entire floor. In this case, it’s ideal to turn to a professional who has experience with refinishing floors. The last thing you want is to accidentally cause serious damage!
